HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE DRY SKIN?

One of your skin’s main roles is to act as a barrier, controlling the movement of moisture in and out of the body. When your moisture barrier loses the ability to function properly, your skin can feel rough and tight.

Dry Skin

Your skin can show that it’s lacking moisture in many different ways. You may notice it has become tight, rough, cracked, red and itchy. The severity of these signs will depend to what extent the moisture barrier has been compromised.

There are several signs that you may have dry skin:

1. YOUR SKIN MAY LOOK DULL, FEEL ROUGH AND TIGHT

This can be the first stage of moisture loss from the skin and the first sign that your skin’s moisture barrier has been compromised.

2. YOUR SKIN FEELS VERY TIGHT, IT MAY LOOK SCALY AND BE CHAPPED

If you don’t care for your skin in the initial stages of dryness, it can dry out even further, resulting in itchiness and a scaly appearance. Red patches may also appear.

3. ELBOWS AND HANDS ARE ROUGH AND CRACKED

Some areas of the body such as the elbows, knees, hands and feet are prone to extreme tightness, roughness, itching and skin cracks. This is because they are more exposed than other areas, so it’s important to ensure these areas are not neglected.

4.  FINE LINES MAY BE MORE OBVIOUS

When your skin is dry for a prolonged period, natural lines and creases can seem more pronounced. Dry, scaly patches and fine lines might also be noticeable under the eyes, on the cheeks and under the jaw.

Dryness is one of the most common skin complaints but it can easily be soothed by following a daily skincare routine and using the right products for your skin. Physiogel is specifically formulated to care for very dry and sensitive skin, with a range of body care products proven to strengthen and repair the skin’s moisture barrier. If you are worried about your dry skin we recommend you speak to your dermatologist or pharmacist.
