HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE A SENSITIVE SCALP?

Though your skull is hard, your scalp can be quite tender due to the presence of lots of nerve endings. When the natural moisture balance of your scalp is compromised, it is vulnerable to sensitivity and irritation.

A sensitive scalp can be extremely uncomfortable and distracting as you go about your daily life. However, although it’s a common condition, it can sometimes be difficult to know if what you’re experiencing is a sensitive scalp. To help you decide, here are the main symptoms:

1. YOU FEEL A BURNING SENSATION

It’s likely that a sensitive scalp will feel tight and you may also experience a burning or stinging sensation.

2. YOUR SCALP IS ITCHY AND IRRITATED

You may find that you’re scratching your scalp regularly or that your scalp feels particularly tight and painful to touch, which can all be signs of a sensitive scalp.

3. YOUR SKIN IS VERY DRY

Although it’s not always the case, many people who have very dry skin find that their scalp can be more sensitive than those whose skin is less dry. This is because very dry skin is more susceptible to sensitivity triggers and more prone to reactions.

Knowing the signs of a sensitive scalp is the first step towards understanding the underlying causes, and from there, improving your scalp’s condition. However, if you are worried or unsure about whether you are suffering from a sensitive scalp, we recommend you talk to your dermatologist or pharmacist.

Your skin can show that it’s lacking moisture in many different ways. You may notice it has become tight, rough, cracked, red and itchy. The severity of these signs will depend to what extent the moisture barrier has been compromised.
