THE CAUSES OF A SENSITIVE SCALP

Just as your skin acts as a barrier protecting your body, the skin on your scalp protects your head. When the natural moisture barrier of your scalp is disrupted, irritation of the skin can occur, leading to heightened scalp sensitivity.

Shampoo

There are several reasons why you may be experiencing a sensitive scalp:

1. HARSH SHAMPOOS

Harsh cleansers in some shampoos can disturb the pH balance of the scalp, leaving it susceptible to dryness and irritation. Opt for a mild shampoo, that’s also free from perfumes and can help cleanse your scalp without upsetting its delicate pH balance.

2. STYLING

Everyday exposure to harsh ingredients in styling products can disrupt your skin’s protective barrier, leading to a sensitive scalp. Frequent styling and blow drying can also lead to irritation. Opt for hypoallergenic products that are gentle on your sensitive scalp and try to keep styling to a minimum.

3. YOUR ENVIRONMENT

The sun, heat, wind and cold can all trigger a sensitive scalp, while pollution such as exhaust fumes and smoggy air can generate free radicals that may cause further irritation. Wear a hat to help protect your scalp from exposure to the sun, cold or wind.

A sensitive scalp is a common condition suffered by both men and women. Now you know the possible triggers, you can more easily manage your scalp sensitivity and improve its condition. However, if you are concerned about your sensitive scalp, we recommend you talk to your dermatologist or pharmacist.

Your skin can show that it’s lacking moisture in many different ways. You may notice it has become tight, rough, cracked, red and itchy. The severity of these signs will depend to what extent the moisture barrier has been compromised.
