HOW TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE REDNESS-PRONE SKIN?

When your skin’s natural moisture barrier is compromised, it becomes susceptible to internal and external aggressors that can cause irritation and trigger redness.

RednessProne Skin

Facial redness tends to appear on the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin and there are several signs that you might be experiencing it:

1. YOU FLUSH OR BLUSH EASILY

Flushing and blushing manifest in similar ways however, the underlying causes are different. To blush is an emotional response whilst a flush is physical. Both are characterised by feelings of warmth and rapid reddening of your neck, chest and face, which can occur without warning and often as a physical response to anxiety, stress or embarrassment. When you flush or blush, the blood vessels in your face expand and blotchiness or solid patches of redness can become visible. In the long term, blood vessels can dilate further and redness can become more permanent.

2. YOU ALREADY HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN

Sensitive skin reacts to external irritants more easily than normal skin. It can often feel uncomfortable and react in an unpredictable way, although the factors that cause it to react can differ from person to person. Facial redness is a common symptom of sensitivity and tends to occur when vulnerable, sensitive skin reacts to internal factors, such as hormones and stress, as well as external or environmental triggers. These can include harsh ingredients, temperature changes and exhaust fumes.

3. YOU SUFFER FROM ALLERGIES

Skin can sometimes become red and blotchy if you come into contact with an allergen, for example pollen, certain harsh ingredients and detergents, or if you have an allergy or intolerance to certain foods.

These are some of the signs that might mean you have redness-prone skin, but if you are worried about your skin symptoms or unsure about what is causing your facial redness, we recommend you speak to a dermatologist or pharmacist.

Your skin can show that it’s lacking moisture in many different ways. You may notice it has become tight, rough, cracked, red and itchy. The severity of these signs will depend to what extent the moisture barrier has been compromised.
