These environmental triggers include:
1. THE SUN
The sun’s UV rays cause the generation of free radicals that can damage healthy skin. As you go about your daily life, your skin is exposed to UV rays which can weaken your skin’s protective mechanisms, making it extra sensitive. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen as part of your daily skincare routine and try and avoid the sun when its rays are at their strongest, between 10am and 3pm. When outside, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and a hat to protect your face and scalp.
2. THE WIND
When your skin is exposed to the wind’s chill, its blood vessels contract to keep heat in. Over time this can weaken your skin’s moisture barrier, causing it to become dry and sensitive. Protect your face and hands by wearing a scarf and gloves when you go outside in windy conditions.
3. CITY LIVING
Working and living in a big city can cause greater skin sensitivity. Pollutants such as cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes and dust can stick to your skin throughout the day and aggravate it by blocking pores and reducing its ability to breathe. Your skin’s moisture barrier is exposed to pollution and over time it can become weakened and irritated, triggering sensitive skin symptoms. Cleanse morning and night with a gentle cleanser to help keep your skin clean and looking healthy.
4. HARD WATER
The water you use to wash your face can trigger sensitive skin symptoms. If you live in a hard water area, usually found in cities, then this can have a big impact on your sensitive skin. Hard water can upset the delicate pH balance of your skin, leaving it feeling irritated and sensitive.
Hot and cold temperatures can weaken your skin’s barrier over time and trigger your sensitive skin. Central heating and air conditioning can also worsen sensitive skin by drawing water from it. Use a humidifier at home to put some moisture back in the air and keep your face covered in hot and cold weather.
Follow these tips to help protect your sensitive skin against environmental triggers and enjoy healthy, beautiful skin every day.
